Pre-Startup Checklist

Complete these in order before your first power-on — whether your machine is brand-new or recently acquired.

Unbox and inspect

Warning

Carefully remove all components. Check for shipping damage before discarding packaging. Register your machine at shopsmith.com within 30 days.

Read the safety section

Review all safety guidelines in your owner's manual before operating. Keep the manual accessible in your shop.

Assemble the tubes

Connect the main tubes per the assembly diagram. Finger-tighten all collar locks before making final adjustments.

Level the machine

Use a level on the main table to confirm the machine is plumb. Adjust the leveling feet as needed.

Install the headstock

Slide the headstock onto the left tube and lock in position. Confirm the spindle rotates freely by hand.

Attach the table

Caution

Mount the main table and align it square to the blade. Use the alignment tool included with your machine.

Set the fence

Install the rip fence and confirm it runs parallel to the blade at both the front and rear of the table.

Check the blade guard

Caution

Install and test the blade guard before any cuts. Never operate the table saw without the guard in place.

Make your first test cut

With scrap wood, make a test rip cut at a low speed setting to verify alignment and confirm the machine runs smoothly.

Troubleshooting

Common Mark V Issues

SymptomFix

Machine vibrates excessively

Check that all collar locks are firmly tightened. Confirm the leveling feet are all in contact with the floor. Inspect the belt for wear or debris.

Table saw blade wobbles

Verify the arbor nut is fully tightened. Check that the blade is rated for the machine's RPM. Inspect the arbor flange for debris.

Fence does not lock parallel

Loosen the fence rail bolts and re-align the fence rail parallel to the miter slot, then retighten. Refer to the alignment section in your manual.

Motor hums but won't start

Check that the speed dial is set above minimum. Ensure the safety switch is in the ON position. On PowerPro units, check that the control panel display is active.

Lathe tail stock won't lock

Clean the tube surface with a dry cloth. Apply a thin coat of paste wax to the tube. The tail stock lock lever should engage with firm hand pressure.

Drill press depth stop slips

Clean the quill rack with a dry brush. Tighten the depth stop lock nut. If slipping continues, inspect the quill rack teeth for wear.

Disc sander table misaligned

Loosen the table tilt lock, set the table to 90 degrees using a machinist square, then retighten. Mark the 90-degree position for future reference.

Belt slips under load

Inspect the belt for glazing or cracking. Check V-belt tension — the belt should deflect approximately 1/2 inch under moderate finger pressure.

Spindle speed reads wrong

On PowerPro units, recalibrate using the calibration procedure in the operator manual. On conventional units, verify the speed chart on the headstock.

Machine trips the breaker

Ensure the machine is on a dedicated 20-amp circuit. Reduce the feed rate. If tripping persists, contact ShopSmith support.
